about

In the middle of last winter, in I think another lockdown, my street got resurfaced. It lasted for about five days. Fleets of mysterious machinery began arriving each afternoon, parking in nearby side streets until around 9pm when the street was cordoned off and what I began to think of as a kind of steam punk mardi gras began. There were giant steel rollers, whizzing bobcats and jack hammers, but the star of the show was the milling machine, lead at a stately pace by a single person regularly calling 'Forward!'. We were all so bored and cooped up loads of people came out to watch this strange and surreal parade. For the first two days I just peered from my window, but on the third day as my flat vibrated in time with my neighbours, and the milling machine, I joined the watchers downstairs with my recording gear, listening as one layer of road was ripped up, and replaced by another in this strangely moving festival of heat, vibrations and renewal.
